ODOURLESS TOILETS
Is it possible to have a completely odour free System?
There are several ways to prevent your toilet system from bad odours.
One of the main problems why Holding tanks smell is that sewage contains two type's of bacteria, Aerobic bacteria and Anaerobic bacteria.
Aerobic bacteria (which needs oxygen ) actually breaks down the sewage, but does not generate any odour.
Anaerobic bacteria thrives in an airless environment, this Anearobic bacteria is what produces the foul smelling gasses in you System.
Why is this important?
Firstly you need to make sure you have plenty of air getting to your holding tank through your breather vent line. The larger in Diameter this breather line the better. The shorter the breather line the better and in some cases having two breather lines may be necessary to create a better airflow throughout the tank. The Anaerodic bacteria ( smelly one ) cannot survive in an Aerobic environment, so as long as you have plenty of air this will keep the Aerobic bacteria breaking down the waste and keep the odour down.
Always use proper marine sanitation hoses throughout the installation. Some white hoses may appear to be sanitation hoses, it can be impossible to tell, but some are totally unsuitable for sewage, so make sure you use the correct hoses. Even the best sanitation hoses may need replacing every few years or sooner if odour is detected.
Always flush your toilet well to prevent waste from standing in the hose. It may be insufficient to just clear the bowl, so make sure you pump all the waste all the way to the tank.
When you are at your pump out facility, after each pump out, wash out your tank with fresh water from your pump out deck fitting. Then pump this out again.
Try to keep pipes running the shortest distance, avoid sagging and tight bends wherever possible.
